I have serious problems with Republicans who deny the impact we have on our environment. But I have just as many issues with Democrats who want to stifle growth.

We need to be innovative, embrace new technologies and science, and give entrepeneurs incentives.

Saving the environment can have many economic advantages.........especially if WE lead the innovative movement for alternate fuels, transportation, and energy consumption. Imagine the jobs and money created from using our own fuel resources (ethanol, methane, or electricity sans fuel), making our own (and for the world) environment-friendly vehicles (hybrids, fuel-cells, or ethanol engines), and etc. There is so much growth and money to be made.........

I am anxiously awaiting the day we stop buying oil from people who hate us, the government isn't controlled by powerful oil corporations, and we Americans buy into the system--by that, I mean we need to be more pro-active (buying a compact hybrid instead of buying a Hummer could be a nice start).

Check out this debate:

I fail to recognize Kerry's point........besides informing us that Newt has stated that their is insufficient evidence of significant climate change due to human causation.

I'm not the hugest fan of the cartoon, but I agree with its premise: we don't have to start running to the hills just yet--there is a way to fight our environmental problems without hurting our economy (which, in theory, could disrupt the welfare of the world).

"Ghetto" comments aside, Newt is a very smart man. I think he won the debate........any thoughts?

Despite my views, I give props to Gore for making this a long overdue discussion.

Sorry I've haven't been posting much, I was in Utah on vacation. I'll try to jump back in later today.

As for the cartoon, it's funny but misses the point (it's by Ramirez and he doesn't really worry about having a point of view that makes any sense).

I think the worry about economic impact is overstated and ridiculous. The impact that climate change will have on our economy is much larger than the impact that preventative action would. This years hurricane season could force us to realize that we cannot afford to wait any longer.

Have you seen Al Gore's movie? I thought it was well-done and interesting. I just can't get over my disdain for the man, he is, in my opinion, a veritable slick politician. He's doing it all for praise and recognition, but at least it's for a good cause.

And now for something completely unrelated... Why the heck aren't Mormons more concerned about the environment? What about the whole stewards of the earth thing?

I blame the overwhelming influence of conservatives in Utah. Instead of thinking about the issue, many people just accept the majority idea that anything we do to protect the environment will hurt the economy. Hogwash. I ride my bike to work every day, it's a little thing but, now I have more money to spend at Wally-World. See! I'm saving the world and helping to fill the pockets of the ridiculously wealthy fat executives at Wal-Mart!

I hope for America to take the lead in new technology............you know, not much has changed with the automobile since the model T days. Pistons still go up and down as fuel is combusted by either pressure or sparks--this up-and-down motion is converted by the crankshaft into rotary motion that makes the axles turn around in cirlces. I'm bored with combustion.

No offense, because I'm a bike-rider too........but that hardly keeps us competitive in the world market (even if it helps Wally World)......when we aren't competitive, we lose stock.......when we lose stock, our economy suffers and our dollars start looking more like pesos.

I just want a booming economy with a thriving earthly environment......is that too much to ask for?

I think it interesting also that more Mormons aren't more interested in taking care of the environment. Maybe they think that when the second coming is here, it won't matter anyway.

Al Gore's movie? Are you kidding? It was the most slanted and one sided view of the environment you could get. I guess he just wanted to ignor the fact that this is the normal cycle of the earths climate.

    hehe..........
I know you guys are kind of kiddin' about Mormons and stuff...but what I've learned is this--Mormons are not alone........few people care about our environment as much as they may claim--just walk around Miami to visualize my point.

I wonder if the 2nd coming will be any more pleasant now that we've been shizzing up this beautiful earth that took our Lord 6 days to create?

I wonder if the 2nd coming will be prolonged from coming because God wants to humble us a little by making us live in this mess that we've been creating.

It is totally unlike God to just clean up our messes.........it's like saying: I'll drink, smoke, and mutilate my body because it'll will be resurrected and made right anyway.

This is great! This might be our first discussion that there are legitimately 3 different views.....Kent????

Glum, did you actually see the movie? The idea that you related is hilarious to me and to 99% of the scientific community. Most scientists agree that the warming of the earth has been greatly accelerated and that has been caused by us. Sure a handful of scientists disagree and claim that it's all natural but there are also those few loners with PHD's who spend their careers hunting bigfoot (The most famous of which is from Idaho, ironically). The science in the movie is sound, some of the possible results are conjecture but overall, it is surprisingly accurate for a movie by a politician.

Really, the only people who don't buy into global warming are those in the Republican party and even those guys are caving in and saying 'oops'.

I still can't stand the man, I wish Barack had made it.
